Thornton was incorporated in 1763 and was named for Dr. Matthew Thornton, a surgeon in the Pepperell expedition of 1745. He was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and held several other political positions, including “president” of the state following the Revolutionary War. Villages in Thornton include West Thornton and Goose Hollow.
